I didn't care for the play or the opera version. The main character Tosca was an annoying character that was full of jealousy and whiny in every single scene.

It was beautiful! And grab a box of tissues because it will bring tears. Here's a link for the Opera, subtitled in English. Victorien Sardou

An academic historian who has actually performed the role of Tosca, Nicassio is perfectly suited to deal with the opera's political and musical complexities. Puccini's Tosca, one of the most popular operas in the repertoire ever since its January 14, premiere, is a violent drama based on Victorien Sardou's hit play La Tosca, which was written as a star vehicle for the famous French actress Sarah Bernhardt. In the translation from play to opera, the action was tightened, the characters were "Italianized," and most of the political motivation was cut. The action of the play and the opera takes place in Rome between noon of June 17, and dawn the following day, during which time all of the major characters die violent deaths.

La Tosca is a five- act drama by the 19th-century French playwright Victorien Sardou. Despite negative reviews from the Paris critics at the opening night, it became one of Sardou's most successful plays and was toured by Bernhardt throughout the world in the years following its premiere. The play itself had dropped from the standard theatrical repertoire by the mids , but its operatic adaptation, Giacomo Puccini 's Tosca , has achieved enduring popularity. There have been several other adaptations of the play including two for the Japanese theatre and an English burlesque , Tra-La-La Tosca all of which premiered in the s as well as several film versions.

La Tosca: The Drama Behind the Opera

The Sardous were settled at Le Cannet , a village near Cannes , where they owned an estate, planted with olive trees. A night's frost killed all the trees and the family was ruined. He was in succession a book-keeper at a commercial establishment, a professor of book-keeping, the head of a provincial school, then a private tutor and a schoolmaster in Paris, besides editing grammars, dictionaries and treatises on various subjects. With all these occupations, he hardly succeeded in making a livelihood, and when he retired to his native country, Victorien was left on his own resources. He had begun studying medicine, but had to desist for want of funds.
